Solder Field a bad place to see a game

In 1990 I got a couple of tickets to the Bears/Packer game in Chicago. It was cold and a driving rain during the entire game. The problem with going to Chicago is most of the fan there could very well be in any of the caveman commercials. But the worst part is when they all get drunk and start harrassing the fan for the oposing team. This was the first NFL game I had ever been to. I knew the trip was in trouble when we walked up to the ticket window and they were selling shirts and sweathshirts outside that said "F**K Green Bay". I don't know that I would ever waste my time driving back up to Chicago to see any game.

1989 Replay game

We will always wonder if the 89' team had won just one more game and got into the playoffs what might have happened? As that season unfolded it almost seemed that the Packers were a team of destiny. The thrilling last minute wins, the replay game. It had all the makings of an exciting post season. The only problem is it never happened. The one keeper I have from that season is the entire Nov 5th game against the Bears on tape. If you didn't know that the game was played for real, you might have thought this was a made to tv movie. After all Ditka didn't exactly have fond feeling about the Packers, ever since Greg and he coached against each other. I drag that tape out every once in a while and it still sends goose bumps up my spine and the end of the game.

Jim Irwin and Max Magee The best announcers

I live in Notre Dame country where they have had their share of famous announcers. But listening the sound bites from games broadcast by Jim Irwin and Max Magee made the game even that much better. The nfl films version of the 1996 Super bowl win, with the radio broadcasts dubbed in were excellent. I miss those guys. Although Wayne and Larry do a good job, the Irwin and Magee team were such high caliber that I doubt if they will be duplicated anytime soon.

Lovie Smith is a happy man

Lovie Smith made the coment he was happy to see Farve retire. But we still have a much better team than the Bears and should be able to kick their butts around for several more years. I have the replay game on tape Lovie, from 1989, maybe I'll send you a copy. I have to fight my way thru stupid Bear fan down here in Indiana. And then there are all those Notre Dame fans, which I'm not one.

A new era begins for the Packers

When I heard the news that Bret Farve was calling it quits, it was like I just attended a funeral. I was in mourning for a week or more. After all the Packers came within an eyelash of going back to the big dance. I didn't think it would end quite this was. But after listening to the press conference, I understood why Farve decided to move on. I was in a similar situation working in a high stress field and after a while you get burned out. I have no doubt that Bret could have played for another two or three years if he chose to do so. But we all know good things come to an end at some point. The good news is we still have a kick ass team. Mccarthy has proven to be a good field general, and Thompson has surprised me, whey last year at this time I thought he had his head in the sand.
